Chiefs announce team MVP and rookie of the year award winners

Tuesday, The Kansas City Chiefs announced the winners of their Derrick Thomas and Mack Lee Hill awards. Each award represents the team MVP and rookie of the year for the team’s 2021 NFL season, respectively.

This year’s MVP is a player at the forefront of Chiefs fans’ thoughts. The awards are determined by a vote from Chiefs players at the end of the year.

Safety and Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee Tyrann Mathieu received the Derrick Thomas award. A vocal leader in the locker room and the nucleus of the defense, the award doesn’t come as a surprise.

Mathieu had 60 solo tackles in 2021, six passes defensed, a sack, three fumble recoveries and three interceptions. Mathieu also recorded a touchdown off of one of his interceptions.

The safety’s future with the team remains uncertain.

Rookie linebacker Nick Bolton received the Mack Lee Hill award.

Bolton led the Chiefs in tackles (112). The linebacker also had three passes defensed, a fumble recovery and 11 tackles for loss.
