Little Rock crime levels off in recent weeks, but for the year, the trend is up

The Little Rock Police Department released today crime statistics for the year through June 20.

The email began by emphasizing the positive — an incidence of violent crime (homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault) about the same — up or down 1 percent — for the same week last year in the last four weeks.

But the figures overall aren’t so rosy. The violent crime index is down slightly, thanks primarily to a drop in aggravated assaults. But homicides are up sharply and the number of violent crimes is 15 percent higher than the five-year average.

Property crimes are up 10 percent this year against the same period last year and the combination of violent and property crimes is 7 percent higher than last year.
