The Overland Park, Kansas Police Department is investigating an early morning homicide in a busy area of the city.Police said the incident happened in the 8500 block of West 8th Street — that area is near the Overland Park City Hall, and not far from Shawnee Mission West High School.News Chopper 9’s Johnny Rowlands flew over the scene and noted most of the Greenbrier Condominiums, across from Shawnee Mission West, have been roped off with crime scene tape. The police investigation was centered in a parking lot toward the middle of the complex. Police said officers were called to the area around 5:20 a.m. after witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing 2-3 people running through the parking lot of the complex and jumping into two vehicles. Officers found a man dead from an apparent gunshot wound in the parking lot. He was identified as Jeren Hinton, 35, of Overland Park.Detectives are working to learn more. Police said they believe the suspects have fled the area and there is no immediate danger to neighbors, or the nearby high school. This case remains under investigation.
