Tulsa family calls for peace after viral TikTok video shows an intense encounter 102.3 KRMG

TULSA, Okla. — A Hispanic couple from Tulsa say they were racially abused and threatened with a gun. A video of the encounter went viral on TikTok, gaining more than a million views.

The video has sparked outrage online. But now, the family is calling for peace.

Ivan Garfias and Cecilia Ortiz say it happened on Feb. 1.

They’ve lived in Tulsa for 20 years, and raised their family here. They have four children, ranging from 7 months to 17 years.

The family says they’ve never had a problem with anyone being racist to them before, and they’ve never been threatened with a gun. “It’s the first time. I’ve got good friends who are Americans, and black people. I don’t have trouble with no one,” said Ivan.

“It’s the first time it’s happened in my life. And I don’t know what he’s thinking, this guy. Because I never expected him to put a gun in my wife’s face.”

Ivan runs his own business, specializing in remolding and painting. The argument seen in the video was sparked over renovations on a house that Ivan was working on in Tulsa.

Ivan says he was contacted by a company called SFR3, and the man seen in the video was the project manager. Ivan says he paid out of pocket to paint, install mirrors, and hardware on the doors.

Once he completed the job, he approached the manager and asked for payment. Ivan says the manager refused, saying he hadn’t finished the job yet. Ivan tried to take back the goods that he had paid for.

That’s when the argument started, and the manager allegedly got aggressive.

Ivan’s wife Cecilia started filming the interaction. They say the man pushed the camera out of the way and put a gun in Cecilia’s face.

“When that happened, you just get shocked. You don’t think about anything because you mind has gone blank,” said Cecilia.

This interaction was not shown on video.

Ivan and Cecilia say the manager then put the gun in his truck and continued to argue using racist terms.

The video was uploaded to TikTok, where people shared their disgust over the manager’s words. People have tried to find the man, and unfortunately have wrongly identified him as a man working for a company in Jenks, 180 Degree Kitchen and Bath Design Group.

FOX23 spoke to the owners of that business earlier this week and they say they’ve received thousands of messages of abuse, even death threats.

Now, Ivan and Cecilia are calling for peace.

“Please stop sending messages to the other company. That guy is not the problem, it’s not the same company. I’m so sorry for the mess,” said Ivan.

SFR3 issued a statement, saying: “Those actions are not aligned with our company values, and he is no longer employed by SFR3.″

Ivan says he was paid for what he owed. He is also considering taking legal action.

The couple says the filed a report with the police. FOX23 is waiting for a statement.
